5 Expert Tips for Choosing Sustainable and Eco-Conscious Paper

Jul 29th 2021

Have you been wanting to incorporate sustainable paper products into your school or business use but don’t know where to start? You’re not alone.

“Sustainable” and “eco-conscious” are words that are used often to market paper products, but it can be difficult to determine what these terms actually mean to the company that makes them. At Top Flight, we are committed to environmental responsibility and sustainability, and to us, that means keeping our processes as green as possible from start to finish.

Here are some of our tips for choosing sustainable paper options:

1. Compare Your Options

The first thing you should do when choosing sustainable paper products is weigh your options. There are many companies that claim to carry eco-conscious paper products, so you shouldn’t commit to the first one you come across.

When you have a list of possible sustainable paper companies to choose from, then you can begin looking into the nitty-gritty of each to see which best aligns with your goals and needs.

2. Start With The Standards

Did you know that there are government standards for what constitutes environmentally friendly paper? The Environmental Protection Agency outlines many paper products under the Comprehensive Procurement Guidelines to promote the use of materials recovered from municipal solid waste.

EPA recommends that procuring agencies (like paper product manufacturers) establish a minimum content standard expressed as a percentage of recovered fiber, including a percentage of postconsumer fiber. This can give you a good idea of how truly sustainable office paper products are. Top Flight’s recycled products meet or exceed international standards for sustainable practices.

3. Prioritize Recycled Materials

While the use of recycled materials isn’t the only thing that makes a supplier sustainable, it is a very important factor. Make sure to ask what percentage of the paper products are made from recycled materials and ensure that the paper itself can be easily recycled at your own office.

4. Look For The Source

When choosing sustainable school or office paper, it’s also important to understand where exactly the products are made and the source of the paper. Look for products that carry paper certifications such as SFI or SFC. This will indicate that the paper was sustainably sourced.

5. See The Bigger Picture

Finally, you must look at the bigger picture of sustainability. Does the company you’re choosing to purchase paper from have environmentally-friendly practices throughout its entire organization? Purchasing paper from a company that chooses to be sustainable overall, not just through its products, helps the environment even more.

At Top Flight, we understand that even small actions, like recycling all scraps generated in the production process, helps reduce our eco-footprint as much as the big steps, like the solar panels installed on our property to offset carbon emissions.
